Usage of КТО, ЧТО, ЭТО in questions

The question words ЧТО (what) and КТО (who) can be used in questions independently the same way they are used in English. Кто? is asked to request more details about a person. Что? is asked to get more information about a thing.

In addition, these words are often used in combination with the word ЭТО (this). "Что это?" (What is this?) and "Кто это?" (Who is this?) are the most common questions. If you ask a question with the word ЭТО then you will most likely hear it in the answer to your question. For example:

Что это? Это тетрадь.
Кто это? Это преподаватель.

The word ЭТО can be used in so called questions of choice. The complete question of choice in Russian includes the word ИЛИ and has the structure remarkably similar to the question of choice in English. For example, "Это окно или нет?" (Is this a window or not?)
