Russian preposition "на"

For what date …?

 Lesson comments

When people want to find out about the time for which you want to buy or reserve something, they use the phrase:

На какое число вы хотите + [verb] + [noun]?
 [nah kah-KOYEH chees-LOH vi kha-TEE-teh ...]
For what date would you like to + [verb] + [noun]?
На какое число вы хотите забронировать номер?
 [nah kah-KOYEH chees-LOH vi kha-TEE-teh ...]
For what date would you like to reserve the room?
На какое число вы хотите купить билет?
 [nah kah-KOYEH chees-LOH vi kha-TEE-teh ...]
For what date would you like to buy the ticket?

You’ve heard this question in the first dialog already. It’s very easy and has all you need to answer it. The key is to use the preposition НА, which has the literal mearning “on” but should be translated idiomatically as “for”.

Я хочу забронировать номер на первое августа.
 [yah kha-CHOO zah-brah-NEE-ruh-vaht' NOH-meer nah PYEHR-vuh-yeh AHV-goos-tah]
I want to reserve the room for August 1.
or, simply
На первое августа.
 [nah PYEHR-vuh-yeh AHV-goos-tah]
August 1.

Note, that the name of the month should be changed into the Genitive. For example, январь becomes января (genitive case). At the same time, the ordinal number for the date must be changed into the neuter singular form. For example, первый becomes первое (neuter singular). You can find a more detailed explanation about that in the lesson on how to tell the date in Russian.
